Two GDF ranks charged with drug trafficking

Two members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) have been charged with drug trafficking following their arrest on Saturday, July 27, during a major police operation.

Edward Mc Calmont, 40, from Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, and John Johnson, 24, from Timehri Docks, East Bank Demerara, were arrested with 316 lbs of narcotics. They face charges of possession of narcotics with intent to traffic, under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substance Control Act, Chapter 10:10.

The two GDF ranks appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. They have been remanded to prison and are scheduled to return to court on Monday, August 19, 2024.

The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and underscores the gravity of the narcotics trade in the region.
