GWI to implement smart meter programme later this year

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is currently upgrading its services with the use of technology and later this year, the company will be implementing a smart meter programme.

The programme, GWI Chief Executive Officer Shaik Baksh said, will kick off with the procurement and installation of 10,000 smart meters in Georgetown.

“A smart metering pilot is going to be implemented so that you can stay in office and get the reading of the meters,” Baksh revealed at a press conference on Thursday.

With the use of smart meters, GWI will be able to improve its data recording and will also be able to better tackle instances of irregularities.

“We are doing a lot of work upgrading our technology here. Smart metering programme is the latest technology upgrade,” Baksh said.

Noting that the company is aware of existing concerns of its customers, Baksh explained that efforts are being made to rectify them.

But to remedy this, Baksh said it will take time.

“So you don’t have to go street by street and reading the meters.

You can have a portal in the offices and read the meters. There is real advancement and that is coming about because we are a viable utility company now,” Baksh said.
