Female driver dies, four others injured in Corentyne accident

A 34-year-old woman died on Friday morning after she lost control of the car she was driving and crashed into a bridge along No. 43 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. The deceased is Melena Stephen, a resident of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown. Police Headquarters said she was reportedly speeding at the time of the accident.

The car (PAF 8289), which was owned by Stephen, had four other occupants aged 9, 28, 41, and 54.

Police said Stephen was pinned in the vehicle and was subsequently removed in an unconscious condition by members of the Fire Service and escorted to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, the other occupants were taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and later referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

The nine-year-old was admitted for observation, while the 54-year-old and the 28-year-old were admitted with fractures to the leg and pelvis, respectively.

The 41-year-old was also admitted, suffering from injuries to his chest. Their conditions are regarded as stable.
