Ameela Mangar, a single mother, was left with life-altering injuries after being struck by a truck on her way to work last Thursday. She lost her right leg, and doctors are fighting to save the other.
Mangar, who works as a security guard at the Ramada Princess Hotel, described the tragic incident, explaining that she was attempting to cross the East Bank Demerara Public Road, when she was hit by the truck.
“I was going to work that day and I never use the crossover because I am asthmatic, the crossover does be very difficult for me because I feel like I am losing my breath.
“I see the red light and the vehicles stopped and I decided to cross and when I crossed the truck made a pull off and after that I cannot say what happened,” Mangar recalled.
It has been days since her accident and Mangar claimed that no one reached out to her from the Guyana Police Force.
“Right now this is affecting my life a lot because no Police came to take my statement, I am a single parent with three daughters living in a rented house,” Mangar told the News Room.
According to Mangar, the accident occurred just after 14:00hrs. She said she remembered the time because she had to reach to work for 15:00hrs.
“A guy from M & M Snackette run over and picked me up, he was a good Samaritan because he said ‘stay with me, don’t close your eyes’,” Mangar explained.
Already, Mangar had to undergo two surgeries and is scheduled for another one on Wednesday.
“I had one for the amputation and then they put some steel in the other one and then Saturday afternoon, they took me for a next surgery,” the woman said.
She added that her remaining leg could also be amputated.
“They [doctors] trying hard to save it but the doctor told me don’t get my hopes up because there is a possibility.”
Mangar, now facing a permanent disability, hopes for some resolution.
“I’m hoping to get some justice because I’m the only one my kids have,” Mangar said.
