Chinese National dies in workplace accident at Grove storage facility

The Ministry of Labour has launched a formal investigation following a tragic industrial accident that claimed the life of Chinese national Mr Eddie Yang late Saturday evening in Grove, East Bank Demerara.

Mr Yang, a resident of Bagotstown, was fatally injured on May 03 at approximately 23:46 hrs when a large quantity of glass, stored inside a 40-foot container at the Zheng Xin Aluminium Alloy Doors and Windows Processing Factory, suddenly collapsed, trapping him beneath the weight.

According to initial reports, co-workers at the Lot 26 Grove Public Road facility acted swiftly to free Mr Yang and rushed him to a nearby medical centre. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.

The Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has since commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Senior OSH Officer Mr Darwin Bourne and OSH Officer Mr Ray Hosannah are leading the inquiry under the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 99:06 of the Laws of Guyana.

The Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, extended condolences to Mr Yang’s family, colleagues, and friends. He also reiterated the Ministry’s call for rigorous adherence to workplace safety standards, stressing the urgent need to prevent such devastating incidents.

“This heartbreaking loss underscores the importance of maintaining strict occupational safety protocols,” Minister Hamilton said. “We urge all employers and workers to prioritise health and safety to avoid future tragedies.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to determine whether negligence or procedural lapses contributed to the incident.
