A total of 46 inmates are awaiting trial for murder as the Berbice Assizes commenced on Tuesday.
Justice Sandil Kissoon is set to preside over the Criminal Session, which will run until February 2026.
During this October session, a total of 56 cases are listed for trial. Among them, 45 males and one female are charged with murder. Additionally, one male is charged with sexual activity with a child, five males are charged with sexual penetration, and one male is charged with sexual penetration with a child. Two males are scheduled to be tried for unlawfully and malicious wounding.
According to a report delivered to the court at the prison, there are 55 male inmates incarcerated at the New Amsterdam Prison and one female inmate at Timehri Prison, all awaiting trial at the Court of the Supreme Court of Judicature, Criminal Division Berbice.
The October session of the Criminal Assizes opened with a traditional parade. Justice Nicola Pierre took the salute and inspected several male officers.
Also present were Region Six Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus, the Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright McIntosh, and his Deputy, Kirk Fraser.
