‘Just want to see my baby grow’- Young mother seeks financial help for critical brain surgery

At just 26-years-old, Brandy Marques should be enjoying the early months of motherhood, watching her newborn grow, celebrating first smiles and settling into life with her child.

Instead, the young mother from Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara is facing a life-threatening medical condition and a financial burden she says she cannot carry alone.

Marques has been diagnosed with a Right Posterior Cerebral Artery aneurysm, a dangerous condition that causes a weak spot in a blood vessel in the brain and can rupture without warning. The diagnosis came after months of severe headaches, seizures, and complications during her pregnancy.

In November 2025, while in the final stage of her pregnancy, Marques was rushed to the hospital after experiencing persistent headaches. She underwent an emergency Caesarean section, and while her baby was delivered safely, her own medical struggles were far from over.

During the complicated delivery, she said her womb was removed, leaving her to grapple not only with physical loss but also ongoing pain and uncertainty.

“No matter what they give me, injections and everything—this headache ain’t going away,” Marques recalled in an emotional live video shared on social media.

Doctors later ordered further tests and an MRI scan confirmed the presence of a brain aneurysm.

Marques was then evaluated by a doctor who recommended a endovascular surgical intervention. This surgery is not offered at the Georgetown Public Hospital. So, Marques was informed that the surgery would need to be done privately, at a cost of $8.5 million.

Marques said she sought help from the Ministry of Health, which pledged $1 million toward the procedure. However, she was told that the cost of additional tests, including another MRI scan, would be deducted from that sum, leaving her still millions short of the amount needed.

“The only thing worrying me today is if I am going to live to see my son get big.

“Tell me where am I going to get $8.5 million from to get that surgery done? I don’t know who to go to, who to turn to,” Marques cried.

Her infant son is now just four months old. Doctors have warned her that the aneurysm could rupture at any time, especially if she becomes stressed or strains herself physically. She has also been advised to have someone constantly nearby, as seizures could strike without warning.

“I am asking you guys to share my story and, if you could assist me in getting this surgery done so that I can get a second chance at life and see my baby grow.

“It’s unfair. I already went through a lot. I lost a lot. I just want to see my baby get big. That’s my only child,” Marques pleaded.
