Raw gold was found in the carry-on luggage of a Guyanese/ Canadian couple scheduled to depart Guyana on a flight to Toronto on Thursday night.
In a release, Police said the quantity of yellow metal suspected to be raw gold was found on Thursday at about 07:20 hours during screening procedures at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspected raw gold was found in the carry-on luggage of a 62-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, both Guyanese/Canadian citizens.
The matter was reported, and the two passengers were detained by Customs officials for further processing. The suspected metal was weighed in their presence and amounted to 15.521 ounces, after which it was secured.
Investigations are ongoing.
Notably, any gold produced must be declared and sold to the Guyana Gold Board or licensed agents. Exporting requires proper licensing and authorisation.
