Gov’t urges small contractors to register for projects under $15M

Small contractors across Guyana are being urged to formally register with the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) to access government contracts valued below $15 million.

The call was issued by the Ministry of Public Works, which noted that many contractors frequently visit the Ministry seeking project opportunities but are not officially registered—making them ineligible to bid.

According to the Ministry, registration is mandatory for contractors to be considered for government procurement opportunities within this category.

The initiative specifically targets:

  • New applicants seeking to enter the construction sector and participate in national development projects
  • Previously registered contractors who must re-register to qualify for contracts under the $15 million threshold

However, contractors already qualified to execute projects above $15 million are not eligible for this category.

The programme is designed to create greater access for small-scale contractors by allowing them to compete for government projects while promoting transparency and fairness in procurement.

Authorities say registration will:

  • Enable contractors to bid for government projects
  • Open up new business opportunities
  • Ensure participation in a structured and transparent procurement system

The Ministry has also outlined key rules for applicants.

Contractors must declare all businesses registered in their name or in the names of immediate family members, with officials warning that false declarations will lead to disqualification.

Additionally, sub-contracting is strictly prohibited for projects within this category, as contractors are required to execute the works directly.

Contractors are encouraged to avoid in-person visits and instead register online through the NPTAB Bidders Registry Prequalification System.

Registration can be completed via the official link:

For technical assistance, persons can contact NPTAB at 223-7042.

The Ministry emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to ensure wider participation in national development, particularly among smaller contractors.
