Mahaicony man survives after jumping from burning building

A Mahaicony man has survived after jumping from a burning building recently, sustaining minor injuries.

Reports state that the fire started around 16:30 hours on Monday at a house in Wash Clothes, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.

The 47-year-old victim, Kushpaul Sharma, told reporters that he was asleep when he smelled something burning. He said that upon checking, he discovered his two-bedroom wooden and concrete house was on fire.

Sharma said he used a pillow to break a glass window to escape. He added that he sustained minor injuries from the fall.

According to Sharma, his wife and four children were at home when the fire started. They all escaped without injuries. He mentioned that all of his belongings, including important documents, were destroyed by the fire.

Sharma, who is unable to estimate his losses, is now considering his next move.

According to information received, there is an ongoing family dispute that escalated, leading a relative to maliciously set the house on fire.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
