Police Force issues kite flying safety advisory for Easter Weekend

See advisory below:

The Guyana Police Force is urging parents, guardians and children across the country to observe proper safety precautions while flying kites during the Easter weekend.

While kite flying remains a cherished Easter tradition, the Force is reminding citizens that it must be done responsibly in order to avoid injuries, accidents and damage to public infrastructure.

Members of the public are strongly advised not to fly kites near power lines, utility poles, transformers or other electrical installations, since doing so can place lives at risk and may also result in serious disruptions. Persons are also being warned against attempting to retrieve kites that become entangled on poles, wires, or other elevated structures.

The Guyana Police Force is encouraging persons to fly their kites only in open spaces such as parks, playgrounds, open fields and suitable open areas, including the seawalls, where they can do so safely and responsibly away from electrical hazards and heavy vehicular traffic.

Parents and guardians are also being urged to properly supervise children during kite-flying activities and to ensure that they do not run onto public roads or into the path of vehicles while chasing or retrieving kites.

The Commissioner of Police Mr. Clifton Hicken has emphasised that safety must remain the priority during the Easter celebrations and is encouraging all citizens to act responsibly so that the holiday can be enjoyed in a safe and peaceful manner.

The Guyana Police Force is therefore appealing to all persons to celebrate responsibly, choose safe open areas for kite flying and help to make the Easter weekend enjoyable and incident-free for all.
