Lucrative cash prizes up for grabs in largest National Pool Championship

The Cue Sports Association (Guyana) Inc. commenced its National Team Championships on July 26 at Butchers Chill Spot on Sheriff Street.

The president of the Association, Alfred Mekdeci, hailed the achievement of opening membership five months ago. The association now has a membership of over 100 persons, and the championship is historic because it is the largest to be held on a national level.

Mekdeci revealed that the championship has a high of twenty teams and approximately 130 players battling for G$2M in cash and prizes.

In a previous interview with News Room Sport, the President said the Association aims to change the sport’s image and create a professional environment where players can represent Guyana internationally.

Many teams present for the launch were uniformed and playing the tournament to World Pool-Billiard Association standards.

Assistant Director of Sport Franklin Wilson commended the Association for their rapid growth and encouraged them to continue on the same trajectory as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission will offer support.

The championships, which conclude on August 18, will be played at various venues in Guyana on weekends. The other venues will be Sunil and Son Pool Bar (Mahaica), Suraj Sports Bar (Meten-Meer-Zorg) and Jason’s Pool Bar (South).

The champion team will pocket G$700,000, the second G$500,000, and the third and fourth G$300,000 each. Trophies will accompany the cash prizes.

Ivanoff Vodka is the main sponsor, with Toucan Distributors, GTT, Farfan and Mendes, Websource Guyana, American Construction, KBS Electrical, Premier Innovations Guyana, Auto Fashion, and Coss Cutter also lending support.
