Panama’s Abrego back for another run at Guyana Cup

Panamanian jockey Nobel Abrego is gearing up for another shot at Guyana Cup glory. The seasoned rider will be in the irons for the newly imported Nova Sol in the feature event of the 16th annual Guyana Cup, a race boasting a staggering purse of G$11.6 million.

The winner of this high-stakes showdown will not only claim the title of Guyana’s top horse but also pocket a cool G$6 million. With Abrego in the saddle, Nova Sol, owned by business mogul Jermaine Sripal, is expected to be a major contender.

Abrego, a familiar face at the Guyana Cup, has praised the improvement of Guyana’s racing scene. Sripal, meanwhile, is brimming with confidence despite being a newcomer to horse ownership. With the guidance of top trainer Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr., the owner of last year’s champion Spankhurst is optimistic about Nova Sol’s chances.

This year’s Guyana Cup is shaping up to be a star-studded affair, with 12 horses, mostly imports, vying for the title. With the largest purse in the Caribbean, the race has attracted top horses from across the region.

Beyond the racing action, the Rising Sun Turf Club will transform into a family-friendly entertainment hub, featuring a kids’ zone and a DJ competition. Post-race, the party will continue with electrifying vibes.

The Guyana Cup kicks off at 12:00 PM local time.
