‘Great opportunities’ for investors as Guyana & Suriname twin development

Neighbouring Guyana and Suriname are supporting each other’s development and Dr. Peter Ramsaroop believes this collaboration presents more opportunities for investors seeking to do business in either country.

Dr. Ramsaroop is the Guyana’s Chief Investment Officer. He heads the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), a government agency that facilitates ventures here.

According to him, the South American continental neighbours have demonstrated a commitment to working with each other through formal agreements. He pointed out that bilateral engagements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been inked recently.

Dr. Ramsaroop also acknowledged an evident private sector-led interest in harnessing the opportunities in both countries.

Both countries are developing their nascent oil and gas sector, though Guyana’s development has progressed further.

Outside of that lucrative sector, Dr. Ramsaroop said the proximity of the two countries allows for other sectors to be easily developed jointly. Those sectors include manufacturing, tourism (particularly eco-tourism and agro-tourism), and agriculture.

“The connectivity between the two has great opportunities for investors who can look at both countries,” he posited.

And as he touted the opportunities available through the ongoing Guyana/ Suriname collaboration, the Chief Investment Officer backed the upcoming International Business Conference (IBC) as a one-stop-shop for investors to capitalise on the countries’ partnership.

The inaugural IBC is set for October 15 to 17.

It is co-hosted by the Suriname Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC) and the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA).

Because of the focus of the conference- that is, on business-to-business connections and exploring the opportunities in both countries- the GO-Invest Head believes investors should capitalise on the event.

“These are all real opportunities this conference will be able to discuss.

“We’re ready to make sure your investment in Guyana and I’m sure the same thing the Suriname counterparts will say,”’ Dr. Ramsaroop said.

For its part, the Guyana Government is ready to incentivise investments particularly those in key sectors like agriculture, agro-processing, and manufacturing.

Dr. Ramsaroop said GO-Invest will be at the conference to help investors, and it remains accessible outside of the IBC.
