Bandit in America Street shooting found wounded at GPHC

Elijah Martin, a 23-year-old unemployed resident of Sophia, Georgetown, is believed to be one of the bandits involved in a recent robbery and shooting at Avenue of the Republic and America Street.

He is at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), under Police guard, getting treatment for a wound to his lower, left abdomen.

According to Police Headquarters, the armed robbery occurred at around 12:26 hrs Friday at J’s Outlet located at the corner of Avenue of the Republic and America Street.

Two identifiable men, clad in blue jumpsuits, rode to the area on a black XR motorcycle. They reportedly stopped in front of a nearby clothes vendor  and money changer; one bandit shouted: “Shoot him and kill him!”

When he heard that exclamation, the money changer ran into J’s Outley and raised an alarm.

The pillion rider who was armed with a gun, however, dismounted the motorbike and ran after the man.

Police said a 33-year-old security guard who was on duty at the store saw what was happening and drew his weapon (a Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol and seventeen live rounds of 9MM ammunition) to intervene. However, he was relieved of the pistol and ammo by the suspect.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old manager who was at the time in the store observed the suspect holding the security guard at gunpoint.

The manager, who was armed with a licensed Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol, discharged several rounds in the direction of the suspect, one of which hit him to his lower abdomen.

The suspect then reportedly dropped the firearm that he was armed with on the floor of the store and ran out of the business place with the firearm that he relieved the security guard of.

The suspect then joined his accomplice, who was waiting on the motorcycle on Avenue of the Republic, and they rode off together.

They went north on the western half of Avenue of the Republic, then turned south on the eastern half, turned north on the said eastern half of Avenue of the Republic, then east onto Charlotte Street and made good their escape.

Police later processed the scene, and four live 9mm rounds, four 9mm spent shells, and a silver and black .32 Taurus pistol with two .32 rounds of ammunition that the suspect dropped, were found at the scene.

On Friday, at about 13:20 hrs, officers then visited the GPHC and found Martin on a bed in the critical bay. He had a wound to his left lower abdomen.

He was reportedly questioned as to how he received his injury, but he remained silent.

The firearm, ammunition and spent shells found on the scene were marked, placed into separate evidence bags and lodged to be taken to the ballistics section for analysis. CCTV cameras were seen in the area and are presently being reviewed.
