In a display of academic prowess, Pradesh Dwarka, a student from Anna Regina Secondary School, has secured a coveted spot among Guyana’s top three students for this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination.
But it wasn’t just ambition that drove Dwarka to this extraordinary feat. His unique motivation was a quest for clarity amid uncertainty.
“I aimed high from the start,” Dwarka confessed.
“It was just a tip of the iceberg because I always hoped not just to be in the top 10 but to be higher. I have high standards and I worked very hard.”
Dwarka wrote 26 subjects simply because he was uncertain about his future aspirations. That uncertainty pushed him to achieve 23 Grade One passes and three Grade Two passes.
“Next for me, I am very uncertain and that is why I did this amount of subjects to see what I’m good at, what I like and what I don’t like… I wasn’t sure what I want to become but now I think I have an idea.”
For now, the young man wants to pursue a career in Civil Engineering, a goal that has become clearer after the results were announced.
The excitement didn’t end with the results. Dwarka’s excellence has earned him a special reward: a car his parents promised him as an incentive.
“When I received the call I was really excited. I called my dad… he was so excited and he said yes, I’ll have to buy this car for you now,” an excited Dwarka recounted.
The journey to this achievement was marked by sleepless nights and sacrifices.
“I started low and then I started leveling up, my family told me you have the potential and don’t waste it and I promised myself not to waste my potential,” Dwarka added.
Dwarka’s mother, Shazeena, was by his side when the results were announced in Georgetown on Tuesday. She reflected on the challenges they faced, saying, “It was a lot of lessons [extra classes] and we had some difficulties… but he did it through hard work and dedicated.”
His parents remain committed to supporting his academic and professional dreams, and yes, they will fulfill their promise of that car.
“We did promise him that, so we will have to go through with that,” Shazeena said. Their story is now an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved with the support of family.
