President Ali, Toronto Raptors discuss Basketball expansion in Guyana

Basketball in Guyana could get a significant boost after President Dr. Irfaan Ali recently with Masai Ujiri, the Vice Chairman of the Toronto Raptors and Co-Founder of Giants of Africa, to discuss how the 2019 NBA champions can help develop basketball in Guyana.

The meeting occurred at the OVO Athletic Centre, the Raptors’ state-of-the-art training facility.

Ujiri explored avenues for the Raptors to contribute to Guyana’s basketball growth, focusing on areas like building sports facilities, organising coaching clinics, identifying young talent, and promoting grassroots basketball initiatives.

Beyond Guyana, Ujiri and the Guyanese leaders also discussed a broader Caribbean initiative to boost basketball across the region.

With their expertise and experience, the Raptors aim to inspire and nurture young talent throughout the Caribbean.

As part of this collaboration, Ujiri is expected to lead a delegation to Guyana later this year to kick-start these initiatives.

This visit marks a significant step in strengthening sports development ties between Guyana and Canada. (Source: President Irfaan Ali)
