Julio Mandook was stabbed to death during a fight with 18-year-old Delson Brown on Monday afternoon. Brown was arrested and remains in Police custody.
Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred in Aishalton Village, South Rupununi, Region Nine, at about 13:00hrs.
According to reports, Mandook and others went to the Aishalton Cemetery to build a tomb and were consuming alcohol.
“They were digging sand from a walkway approximately 600 meters from the site where the tomb was being built,” Police said.
Brown claimed that he was heading home when he saw Mandook digging sand from the walkway and reportedly told him to desist since the removal of the sand would damage the walkway.
This led to an argument that escalated into a scuffle during which Mandook was stabbed.
Police said Brown fled the scene and was later arrested.
One of the other men fetching the sand returned to the walkway and found Mandook bleeding from a wound to his chest. He was immediately rushed to the Aishalton District Hospital for treatment.
During a hospital visit by his reputed wife, Mandook told her what happened and later succumbed to the injury.
