The FIDE General Assembly takes part 21-22 September, parallel to the Chess Olympiad 2024.
The morning session was chaired by FIDE President Arkadij Dvorkovich. The delegates quickly elected Allen Priest of the Chairman of FIDE Verification Commission and Roberto Rivello of the Chairman of FIDE Constitutional Commission, as they were the only candidates for the positions.
The key part of FIDE General Assembly day 1 came after the lunch break – the election of the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission chairman.
Chessdom had extensive preview article on the EDC election here The EDC chairman election started with Vishy Anand welcoming the delegates back to the hall, as President Dvorkovich had another event to attend. Anand invited Roberto Rivello to chair the EDC election.
The voting started and the 170 eligible delegates proceed to vote manually. Some 10+ delegates were missing, as they went to play the round. Roberto Rivello admitted “I was not prepared to be chair of this meeting” Dvorkovich and Anand preferred not to chair the EDC chairman voting session.
At the first vote, Yolander Persaud had 77 ahead of Daniel Florea 59 in the election for FIDE EDC chairman. But not with majority. Babur Tolbaev is out with 27 votes. There were total of 165 votes, of them 163 valid. There had to be round 2 of voting.
