Gov’t already allocating house lots at Silica City – Croal

Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal on Tuesday said the government already started allocating house lots at Silica City, an exciting venture that will be Guyana’s second city.

“We already sent the first set of persons to the banks for prequalifications.

“We have started the allocation there so that it will be an ongoing process… As they come back, we have been allocating (house lots),” Croal told the News Room at the sidelines of an event on Tuesday.

The first 110 houses are being constructed at Silica City, a major development along the Linden/ Soesdyke Highway. Those are houses at both flat and single- elevated structures.

Croal explained that the criteria for allocations there is no different from the countrywide housing programme. That is, persons must apply for a house lot and be selected after screening.

Once selected, potential beneficiaries will undergo a prequalification process that involves demonstrating their financial ability to pay for the house and land.

Since 2013, the establishment of Silica City has been touted by President Ali, who was the Minister of Housing and Water then. It was highlighted that this city could be located near the Linden/Soesdyke Highway in Guyana’s hilly, sand and clay region.

Since his government was elected in 2020, President Ali and various Ministers of Government have talked up the establishment of this city.

The Silicia City project includes shopping centres, apartment complexes, condos, hotels, restaurants, and other facilities.

In addition to green areas and other facilities, the state-of-the-art development will include smart homes outfitted with the newest energy-saving technologies.
