See below the full statement issued:

On Tuesday October 22, 2024, His Excellency Dr Leslie Satruken Ramsammy presented his Letters of Credence to Her Excellency Viola Amherd, President of the Swiss Confederation, formally accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the Swiss Confederation. The ceremony was held at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern, Switzerland.

Following his presentation of Credentials, Ambassador Ramsammy had a private audience with Her Excellency the President, during which Ambassador Ramsammy briefed Her Excellency on the Guyana-Venezuela Border Controversy noting that the last Agreement was signed in Geneva in 1966. This Agreement provided for the modes to resolve the controversy and provided for the resort to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a process which Guyana initiated in 2018.

Her Excellency President Amherd noted that both Guyana and Switzerland are currently non-Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and expressed the hope that the ICJ process is resolved smoothly.

Switzerland and Guyana established diplomatic relations on May 24th, 1977, and have concluded agreements on the reciprocal waiver of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic or official passports, extradition and on the protection of investments. The Swiss embassy in Caracas (Venezuela) represents Switzerland’s interests in Guyana.
