In a heart-wrenching turn of events, 41-year-old Zaman Ali, of No.71 Village, Upper Corentyne, Berbice, has tragically met the same fate as his sister, who died in a similar accident in 2017.
Zaman’s death adds to a series of devastating losses for the family, all linked to road tragedies, and which also includes his father.
At approximately 22:10 hrs on Thursday night, Zaman’s life was abruptly cut short along the No. 61 Public Road in Berbice.
Driving hire car HC 2918, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle while traveling at high speed. The car collided with a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) utility pole, crushing the vehicle and trapping Zaman inside.
Public-spirited citizens who witnessed the crash rushed to his aid, managing to free him from the wreckage.
However, their efforts came too late. Zaman was quickly transported to Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body now rests in the hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The tragedy bears a chilling resemblance to the fatal accident that claimed the life of Zaman’s sister, Shabana Ali, in 2017.
Shabana was driving her Toyota Vitz to Georgetown for an event when she too lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a GPL utility pole near Palmyra. Like her brother, she was pronounced dead shortly after the collision.
Family members have revealed that Zaman and Shabana’s father also died in a road accident many years ago, further compounding the family’s grief.
This series of heart-wrenching losses has left the family struggling to cope with a seemingly unrelenting wave of pain.
Each new tragedy serves to reopen old wounds, and the community is left mourning the untimely loss of yet another life on the roads of Berbice.
