Carpenter injured after accident with cop

Dharamdeo Pooran, a 38-year-old carpenter from Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was injured in an accident on November 9, 2024.

Pooran was riding his motorcycle to work when a Police constable struck him from behind, along the Leonora Public Road. The Police constable was driving motorcar PAD 9163.

“I was riding going to work and I put on my trafficator because I had to make a right turn, and before turning, this guy came from the back and hit me and fling me on the road,” Pooran told the News Room.

He is now unable to work and provide for his family. Pooran is the father of three children, and the sole breadwinner.

The News Room understands that the Police constable was initially arrested and placed on station bail. The investigation into the accident has since been completed and will soon be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The entire accident was caught on CCTV and showed when Pooran slowed on the road to turn right.

A truck was directly behind him when the Police constable overtook the truck and crashed into Pooran. Pooran was flung off his motorcycle and flipped several times before coming to a stop on the road. He received injuries to his head and about his body.

The constable rendered assistance to Pooran and later took him to the hospital.

“I received injuries to my head, shoulder, neck, back, knees…right now I cannot work and move around much because my kneecap burst open,” the man said.

He hopes that justice will be served.
