A 51-year-old money changer was on Friday held at gunpoint and robbed of over $500,000 in local and foreign currency, and his gold chain.
Police said the robbery occurred at about 18:20 hrs on Avenue of the Republic and America Street, Georgetown.
The bandits were masked. One of them was armed with a handgun.
In a statement, Police Headquarters said the victim (who they did not named) also works as a vendor.
Prior to the robbery, Police said the victim was packing clothes into his minibus bus when he was confronted by one of the suspect.
The suspect, pulled out a black handgun from his pants and ordered the victim not to move.
“The suspect pushed his hand into the victim’s pants pocket and took out the above-mentioned money (cash), then he snatched off the victim’s gold chain from around his neck,” Police Headquarters said.
The suspect then joined his accomplice who was waiting on a parked motorcycle and they made good their escape south along Avenue of the Republic towards Hadfield Street.
Police said several persons were questioned by detectives as the investigation continues.
