Gov’t exploring options for new Essequibo, North-West ferries

President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Wednesday revealed that the government has assembled a team of specialists to explore the introduction of two new ferries: one to the Essequibo Coast, and another to ply the North-West route.

“Right now we have a team of technicians and specialists looking to see where we can get another ferry for Essequibo to take more vehicles and more people,” Dr. Ali told a gathering of Essequibians.

He later explained that there is a huge demand for increased travel.

The MV Kanawan and the MV Sabanto ply the Parika to Supenaam route currently; these vessels help connect the Essequibo Coast to the Demerara county. Other vessels travel between the larger Essequibo Islands and Parika.

President Ali also said a new North-West ferry may be needed. The MV Ma Lisha usually operates between Georgetown and the North-West district in Region One.

The MV Ma Lisha was commissioned in 2023 and since then, President Ali said, there has been a surge in travel, food production, and trade. So he believes a new ferry is needed here too.
