MODEC reaffirms commitment to Guyana with major local investment and training

Following its debut at the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo in 2024, MODEC has returned to this year’s event with a stronger resolve to build lasting partnerships in the local energy sector. The company’s Country Manager, Rafael Fumis, took the opportunity on Tuesday to reaffirm the company’s long-term commitment to Guyana while highlighting its ongoing investments in local capacity development.

MODEC is a leading provider of floating energy solutions.

“It’s the second year, and I think two times is a charm. We’re very excited to be back. The conference is a great opportunity for us to engage with suppliers, potential professionals, and really to be at the heart of the conversation. We want to make sure that we are part of the local business community,” Fumis said.

Since its initial entry into the country, MODEC has significantly expanded its local presence. In 2024, the company had a modest team of just seven people. Today, that number has skyrocketed to 31, with expectations for continued growth.

“Next year, by this time, we’ll be about 40 people, and by the end of 2026, we’ll be over 230, including the offshore crew for the FPSO,” Fumis shared. This rapid expansion reflects the company’s ambitious plans to ramp up operations in the region and further integrate into the Guyanese workforce.

Central to this expansion is MODEC’s focus on training and developing local talent.

“One of our first major initiatives is our training programme,” Fumis explained. The company recently hired eight trainees, predominantly in engineering disciplines, who will undergo extensive training in both Brazil and Singapore. During their training, the trainees will also have the opportunity to work offshore, gaining hands-on experience with FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offloading units) – a crucial component in Guyana’s expanding oil and gas sector.

“The trainees will spend five months in Brazil, and then have the opportunity to go to Singapore. During these phases, they will get the chance to work offshore and collaborate with the teams there,” Fumis said, emphasising that the goal is to ensure that the trainees are not only academically prepared but also able to provide support to the FPSO operations set to launch in 2026.

The company’s commitment to building strong local leadership was clear, with Fumis adding, “We believe in building leadership for the long term. We are not here forever, and we want to ensure that we invest in a local team that can take over and lead operations in the future.”

Looking ahead, MODEC’s vision is to create a sustainable presence in Guyana that will span at least the next decade. Fumis highlighted the importance of forging strong partnerships with local suppliers and the Guyanese workforce. “We want to build a legacy here,” he said. “This includes operating the FPSO for ten years with a very strong partnership with local suppliers and professionals.”

With opportunities in Guyana’s energy sector rapidly expanding, Fumis had a clear message for those looking to be part of this growth. “We encourage people to come and talk to us. Understand the scenarios and what we need in terms of services, goods, and professionals. We’re actively looking for local suppliers and professionals to join us on this journey.”
