Police urged to ‘act quickly’ as some NDCs continue to illegally sell, rent state lands

Attorney General Anil Nandlall has called on the Guyana Police Force to “act quickly” in response to reports that some Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) are illegally selling or renting out state lands despite warnings from the government.

The comments were made earlier this week following claims that the chairperson of the Buxton/Foulis NDC was involved in such activities.

Nandlall expressed deep concern over the unlawful practices and stressed that such actions are a violation of the country’s constitution. “The custodian of state lands is the President,” he said. “The President of Guyana has never, under the Constitution and the laws of Guyana, delegated this authority to any other person, including those serving as elected officials in NDCs.”

The Attorney General revealed that the issue had been brought to light by residents of Buxton, who reported that the NDC chairperson had been renting or selling state lands. “A report has been made to the Guyana Police Force, and hopefully an investigation will be commenced,” Nandlall added.

He continued: “These are elected officials for an NDC. How can they be empowered to dispose of state lands?” The Attorney General strongly condemned the actions of those responsible and called for the police to investigate thoroughly, noting that evidence had already been gathered, including signed documents from the chairperson and individuals involved in purchasing or leasing the land.

“I have seen the documents signed by the chairman and by the persons who are buying or leasing these lands,” Nandlall said. “The evidence is there, and I hope that the police will act quickly and address this issue.”

The Attorney General’s remarks follow mounting concerns over corruption and misuse of authority within local government bodies. With clear documentation in hand, Nandlall has urged the Guyana Police Force to set an example by taking swift and decisive action.

“I am hoping that the Guyana Police Force will move swiftly, and we can use this to set an example,” he said, adding: “This is a big fiddle, and it must be addressed without delay.”
