The Enmore Regional Hospital and Little Diamond Regional Hospital are set to open their doors as the first of six new hospitals to be launched in the next six months, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony told the News Room at the weekend.
The two facilities, both located in Region Four, are at the forefront of a larger government initiative to enhance healthcare infrastructure across the country, with investments aimed at modernising existing facilities and creating new, state-of-the-art ones.
“We are on track to open six new hospitals in the next six months, with the Enmore and Little Diamond hospitals being the first to launch,” Dr Anthony said during a visit to the Enmore site.
Though these two hospitals have yet to open, significant progress has been made, as observed during a walkthrough of the Enmore facility on Sunday.
“The construction is progressing steadily. All the rooms are complete, electrical work is finished, and gas installations have been made. The next step is to install the medical equipment, most of which is already on-site,” Dr Anthony explained.

Once the equipment is installed, testing will begin, and staff members who have been assigned to the facility will be trained and prepared for their roles. Dr Anthony expressed his confidence in the imminent opening of the hospital, stating, “We are very close to opening, and once the equipment is fully set up, we will be ready to go.”
This marks a significant milestone in the government’s larger healthcare overhaul, which involves building a total of 12 new hospitals across the country.
The Enmore Regional Hospital will replace the nearby polyclinic, expanding access to services for East Coast Demerara residents.
“Once this hospital opens, people will no longer need to travel to Georgetown for many of their healthcare needs,” Dr Anthony explained.
“We will have services like surgery, childbirth, consultation rooms, and even special services such as ophthalmology, dermatology, and dental care—all available closer to home.”
Similarly, the Little Diamond Regional Hospital is being constructed to support the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, helping to alleviate pressure on other healthcare facilities in the region.
The plan also includes several other new hospitals across Guyana. These include the Bath Settlement Hospital in Region Five, the De Kinderen facility in Region Three, and the Lima Regional Hospital in Region Two, all of which are under construction.
In addition to the regional hospitals, the government is also progressing on the construction of a new Paediatric and Maternal Hospital at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, which will provide specialised care, including a paediatric ICU and obstetrics services. Meanwhile, a state-of-the-art five-level hospital is being built in New Amsterdam, Region Six, which will become a premier healthcare institution in Berbice and significantly enhance medical services for the region.
In addition to these new builds, substantial upgrades are underway at several existing hospitals, including the Linden Hospital Complex, West Demerara Regional Hospital, and Bartica Hospital, further bolstering the country’s healthcare capabilities.
Hinterland communities are also set to benefit, with four new telemedicine-equipped hospitals being built in Regions 1, 7, 8, and 9. These facilities at Kamarang, Moruca, Lethem, and Kato will make it easier for residents in remote areas to access healthcare services without needing to travel long distances.
“The goal is not just to build hospitals, but to ensure they meet the needs of the communities they serve,” Dr Anthony remarked. “We have a dedicated team working to ensure that, alongside construction, healthcare professionals—doctors, nurses, and technicians—are ready to provide care.”
