Jonnah Pedro, a 25-year-old labourer, was allegedly stabbed to death on Monday night after an argument erupted during a family discussion in Karasabai, Region Nine.
Police said Pedro’s attacker is his stepfather, Michael Francis, a 45-year-old unemployed resident of Rukumuta Village, South Pakarima, who is currently hospitalised under Police guard. He was also injured during the incident which took place at about 19:30 hrs.
In a statement, Police Headquarters said that the suspect, his wife, and their teenage daughter left their Rukumuta Village home for Karasabai to uplift their cash grant. The following morning, Pedro, who resided in Brazil crossed the border to Guyana to also uplift his cash grant.
Upon arriving in Karasabai, Pedro met with his relatives including Francis, at the Regional Democratic Council office where the cash grant was being distributed.
There, they uplifted their cheque and proceeded to a nearby shop where they were imbibing together.
At around 17:00 hrs, however, the suspect, Pedro, and other relatives went to the house of another family member, Quincyann Albert.
Whilst there, Police Headquarters reported that Francis started to talk about his brother, Moses Francis who was allegedly murdered in Rukumuta Village on March 8, 2025.
“The suspect became very aggressive and started to curse and make threats to kill the person who killed his brother,” Police said.
It was then that Pedro advised Francis to calm down but he refused, became annoyed, and inflicted the wounds resulting in Pedro’s death.
“The suspect got annoyed at being rebuked and, in the presence of the victim’s mother and other relatives, he allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife from his green haversack and stabbed the victim in his head, right armpit, and right shoulder. The victim ran a short distance and fell,” Police Headquarters explained.
An alarm was raised and Pedro’s mother and his sister tried to unarm Francis, who overpowered them and stabbed himself in his chest.
Francis and Pedro were both taken to the Karasabai District Hospital where Pedro succumbed to his injuries.
Francis was transferred to Lethem Regional Hospital where he is presently hospitalised under Police guard. His condition is regarded as serious.
Investigations are ongoing.
