Hermonstine, Scott and Stanton among challengers of Hutson for AAG presidency

Aubrey Hutson’s bid for a fourth consecutive term as president of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will be fiercely contested at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, March 16.

Sheryl Hermonstine, the AAG’s First Vice-President, and Committee Member Niall Stanton are challenging Hutson, signaling a potential shake-up within the organisation.

Adding to the competition, seasoned track and field coach Mark Scott has also been nominated for the top position.

Sources indicate further nominations have been submitted.

AAG General Secretary James Cole, speaking to News Room Sport on Thursday, confirmed some of the nominations, noting that multiple individuals are in contention for various roles within the association.

Cole indicated that the verification process to confirm which clubs are in good financial standings and thus far eligible to vote is ongoing to be ratified by Attorney at Law Eimly Dodson, the returning officer.

Then General Seecaey indicated that 12 clubs are officially registered under the AAG, and other submissions of clubs to come under the AAG’s umbrella will be approved after the elections.

Cole reminded that “the last annual general meeting was held in 2016” while the AAG  had elections in 2021.

The elections come at a time of heightened scrutiny following public disagreements among the current AAG executive who have raised concerns about the governance of athletics in Guyana.

The AGM will occur at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue.
