A 47-year-old truck driver has been granted bail following charges of causing death by dangerous driving, after a tragic accident in which a Venezuelan national lost his life.
Rambeer Singh, of Lot 96 Lima, Essequibo Coast, was charged in connection with the fatal incident that occurred in October 2023 at Cullen Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
The victim, Angel Azocar, a 33-year-old porter from Reliance, Essequibo Coast, tragically died after being trapped inside a garbage truck following a crash. Singh was charged under Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, which governs dangerous driving resulting in death.
The case was heard on Tuesday at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke. Singh pleaded not guilty to the charge, and bail was granted in the amount of $500,000. As part of the conditions for his release, Singh is required to report to the Anna Regina Police Station on the last Friday of every month until the trial commences on 28th March 2025.
The fatal crash occurred on the morning of Saturday, October 07 2023, at approximately 05:00 hrs. Singh was driving a motor lorry (#GAE 4065), owned by Puran Brothers Disposal Inc., along the Cullen Public Road when the vehicle lost control and plunged into a nearby trench. Singh, along with two other passengers, 39-year-old Govie Daniels and 26-year-old Isaiah Latchman, were all rescued from the vehicle by local citizens with the help of the region’s Fire Service.
However, Azocar was trapped inside the truck’s cabin in an unconscious state. After a prolonged effort, he was eventually freed, but sadly, he was later pronounced dead at the Suddie Public Hospital. His body is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Singh and the other passengers were treated for minor injuries at the hospital and later discharged.
