Guyana and Paraguay Olympic Committees forge historic alliance

The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP) have cemented a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), marking a significant step towards enhanced collaboration and mutual growth in sports development.

This strategic alliance, born from extensive dialogues and collaborative efforts, sets the stage for long-term cooperation in athlete training, knowledge exchange, and overall sports advancement.

The MOU establishes a robust framework for collaboration across key areas, including high-performance sports, human resource development, technical expertise sharing, and capacity building.

It also outlines concrete initiatives aimed at expanding physical activity opportunities for athletes in both nations, leveraging shared resources for mutual benefit.

During a pivotal visit to Guyana, COP President Camilo Pérez López Moreira and Mario Cilenti engaged in high-level discussions with the GOA’s Executive Committee, government officials, including Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr., and other key stakeholders.

Their itinerary also included visits to local sports facilities, demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering closer ties with Guyana’s sporting community.

COP President Camilo Pérez López Moreira expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This agreement with the Guyana Olympic Committee strengthens our commitment to the development of sport in the region.

Through this Memorandum of Understanding, we promote cooperation, the exchange of knowledge, and the growth of our athletes and professionals, further strengthening the Olympic ties between our nations.”

Key Collaborative Projects:

Athlete Development: Providing Guyanese athletes, from cadet to senior levels, with training opportunities in Paraguay’s high-performance centers and provincial leagues, with programs ranging from one to six months.
Training and Competition: Facilitating high-level training for Guyanese coaches and athletes, focusing on technique refinement and performance enhancement, with training stints varying from short-term programs to one- or two-year specialized programs. The initiative also includes hosting COP athletes and coaches in Guyana, particularly in athletics and rowing, for collaborative training sessions.
Coaching Development: Offering Guyanese coaches specialized training and education alongside top-tier professionals in Paraguay, aiming to elevate coaching methodologies and technical expertise.
Equipment Support Grant: Enabling the provision of sports equipment to support mass participation, talent identification, and school-based programs across Guyana’s ten administrative regions, as well as providing additional competition equipment for hosting international events.
National Sports Facility Development: Exploring potential funding and support for the construction of a National High-Performance Training Facility in Guyana, providing elite training environments and positioning Guyana as a host for regional and international competitions.
Cricket Development in Paraguay: Guyana’s leading role in developing cricket in Paraguay through training, coaching expertise, and technical guidance.

GOA President Godfrey Munroe underscored the transformative potential of the agreement, stating, “This is a landmark collaboration that will provide much-needed training exposure, scholarship opportunities, and high-performance environments for our athletes and coaches. It is also a strategic investment in human resource development, planting the seeds for the future growth of our sports ecosystem.”

He emphasised the broader significance of the partnership, highlighting its role in fostering cultural and sports exchanges.

“This initiative serves as a catalyst for deeper cultural and sports exchanges, fostering stronger bonds between our nations through knowledge transfer, shared methodologies, and mutual respect. Sports will be the bridge that brings the people of Guyana and Paraguay closer together,” Munroe added.

The GOA extended its gratitude to COP President Camilo Pérez López Moreira, the Paraguayan government, and all stakeholders who contributed to the realization of this collaboration.

The MOU signifies a commitment to the Olympic spirit and promises to deliver lasting benefits to the sporting communities of both Guyana and Paraguay.
