Two women were nabbed with marijuana in separate incidents in Region One (Barima- Waini).
In the first instance, Police Headquarters reported that 24-year-old Dawantie Thackurdeen was nabbed with about 2.6 pounds (or about 1.190 kilogrammes) of marijuana at her Port Kaituma shop on March 31.
Ranks in the region received intelligence about the narcotics Thackurdeen had.
The ranks met her at the shop and enquired about who the shop owner was, and she indicated that it was a man called ‘Wicked Tail’ who was in Georgetown. Daywantie told the ranks she was the shopkeeper.
Police then told her of the information received and the intention to conduct a search of the shop for anything illegal (narcotics, arms, and ammunition). The female shopkeeper was asked if she had anything illegal to declare before the search, and she reportedly said, “Yes sir.”
She then took the ranks into the shop area, where she took out two bulky plastic bags from under the counter, each containing a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be Cannabis.
The bags also contained a quantity of what appeared to be compressed marijuana.
The suspected Narcotics were shown to her, and further searches were conducted, but nothing else illegal was found.
Thackurdeen was told of the offence committed and cautioned. She replied, “This is all I get, a man bring this last night. The boss sent it.”
She was arrested and escorted to the Port Kaituma Police Station along with the Cannabis, which was weighed in her presence and amounted to 1.190 Kg. The shopkeeper is in custody, assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Chrislyn Alleyne was nabbed with about 58.3 grammes of marijuana on March 28. She was nabbed by an officer from the Port Kaiturma Station.
Polcie said she was arrested and later charged with the offence of Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of Trafficking.
Alleyne appeared at the Baramita Police Station, Region One, before Magistrate Rabindranaught Singh, via Zoom, to answer the charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $261,900 or six months imprisonment.
