Rohan Persaud, a 57-year-old driver, died after the brakes on the truck he was driving failed, causing the vehicle to roll down a hill and pin him inside.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 07:00 hrs at Kamechara Creek, Lower Pomeroon River. Police reported that the truck’s porter, Deonarine Warren, was also injured.
The logging truck is owned by Barakat Timbers Concession Ltd.
Deonarine told investigators that they were heading in the backdam when the incident occurred.
According to him, the brakes failed while they were climbing a hill. The truck came to a halt after it rolled backwards.
He said he observed Persaud was pinned under the left side front wheel and made efforts to free him but failed.
With no success, he told Police he went further along the trail to seek assistance, and on the way, he met with some workers on a tractor who assisted in extracting Persaud’s body and escorted them to Charity Cottage Hospital. Persaud was pronounced dead there.
Deonarine was also treated and subsequently transferred to Suddie Hospital for further medical attention.
Persaud’s body is presently at the Charity Cottage Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
