Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said the central government will be working with Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to develop landfill sites in various areas to majorly address garbage collection concerns.
The Vice President spoke about his recent engagement with local government leaders at a press conference on Thursday. At that engagement, he announced increases in the government subventions for NDCs and municipalities.

And Jagdeo said the government hopes that local government bodies will “play a greater role in addressing the problems we face in the communities generally.” A huge focus, he said, should be on small drainage and irrigation works, upgrading cemeteries and proper garbage collection.
Zeroing in on garbage collection efforts, the Vice President said suitable areas will be found in communities to develop landfill sites. Those areas will be properly developed so NDCs can collect garbage and dispose it at the site instead of spending additional sums to transport garbage collected to established landfill sites.
“We are going to spend a sum of money working with them to ensure that in every local government body area, they have their own landfill site that they can manage and offer decent service to people,” he said.
