Kayandra Ornella Lindie, a 30-year-old woman, died after helping to rescue her five-year-old son following a boat accident along the Berbice River early Friday morning.
Lindie worked as a cook at Leisure Inn and resided on Main Street, East Canje Berbice. Her brother, Kesseon Omardeon Lindie, shared with reporters that she had departed home on Thursday, planning a trip up the Upper Berbice River, intending to return by passenger boat on Friday.
Kesseon stated that he learned that as his sister made her return journey between 04:00 hrs and 05:00 hrs, the boat encountered an obstruction and capsized.
“She suffocate and she barely put out her son,” he related.
Fortunately, other passengers were rescued by a passing vessel. Some of those rescued sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for treatment.
Sadly, Lindie was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“Her son said his mother push him out the boat and said ‘you can’t die with me.’ When she go to come out she stifle and died in the boat,” Kesseon revealed.
Kesseon mentioned that his nephew suffered only minor injuries to his hand.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
