Guyana Harpy Eagles soar to another Four-Day title

Guyana Harpy Eagles have once again asserted their dominance in West Indies cricket, clinching the regional Championship title after their final-round encounter against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force ended in a draw at Queen’s Park Oval on Saturday.

It is the third on the trot for the Eagles and an eighth in ten seasons of the Professional Cricket League.

While the top-of-the-table clash didn’t produce a winner, the stalemate was enough for the defending champions to finish the season with an unassailable 126.6 points.

This comfortably placed them ahead of the Red Force, who provisionally finished second with 111 points.

Barbados Pride eventually finished second.

It marks another successful chapter for Guyanese cricket, with the Harpy Eagles winning four of their seven matches and displaying consistent, title-winning form throughout the campaign.

Resuming on 101-2 in their second innings, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force mounted a spirited fightback, led by a magnificent century from Jason Mohammed. He struck a masterful 125 off 186 balls, including 14 boundaries – his 17th first-class hundred and fourth of a prolific season.

Despite losing Cephas Cooper early for 28, Mohammed found a valuable partner in Bryan Charles (38), who added a crucial 69-run stand before being dismissed by Ashmead Nedd.

The Red Force rallied around Mohammed, and his 140-run partnership with captain Joshua Da Silva reignited hopes of a dramatic final-day twist.

Da Silva played a lively innings, scoring 77 off just 79 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. However, his aggressive intent led to his downfall when he skied a shot off Veerasammy Permaul and was caught by Nial Smith.

Mohammed continued his impressive knock before the hosts eventually declared, setting Guyana a target of 147.

Guyana’s spin duo proved pivotal once again. Ashmead Nedd claimed an impressive 4-105, while veteran Veerasammy Permaul chipped in with 3-138.

With limited time remaining in the day, the Harpy Eagles opted for a cautious approach.

Raymond Perez (26 not out) and Matthew Nandu (7 not out) calmly guided their side to 33 without loss, securing the draw and, more importantly, the West Indies Championship title.
