The Pele Football Club Alumni Corporation, based in the USA, launched its annual Educational/Development Youth Week Celebration 2025 with a Recognition Luncheon on Sunday at Herdmanston Lodge in Georgetown.
The event saw the Alumni honour three individuals and an entity for their significant contributions to the success of the Pele FC Alumni Educational Programme.
In attendance were two of the awardees, along with the Chairman and Executive members of the Pele FC Alumni and the President, Executive, and senior players of the Pele Football Club.
Alumni Chairman, Denis ‘Ivor’ Carrington, who presided over the luncheon, expressed his gratitude to his US-based colleagues for their consistent decade-long commitment to travelling to Guyana and investing in the nation’s youth through various empowering initiatives.
Carrington emphasised the personal sacrifices made by the Alumni members to raise funds and dedicate their time to give back to their homeland, a commitment he affirmed would continue.
The honorees recognised for their unwavering support of the Pele FC Alumni Educational Programme were prominent beverage company Banks DIH and Mortimer Stewart for their steadfast backing. Ms. Dawn Braithwaite was also lauded for her long-standing commitment and dedication to the programme.
Additionally, current Pele FC Captain, Shemroy Arthur, was recognised for his exceptional leadership, which led the team to victory in the Georgetown Football League’s Division One championship. Arthur was unable to attend, and his award was received by the team’s Vice-Captain, King Solomon Austin.
Looking ahead, the Alumni’s annual two-day Educational Programme is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at the Marian Academy, where approximately 120 students aged 14-18 will participate in sessions led by various presenters. Each student will receive school supplies at the end of the programme.
Meanwhile, the annual football day, initially planned for the previous Wednesday at the Ministry of Education Ground, was postponed due to inclement weather. This event has been rescheduled for this Thursday at the Farnum Ground, commencing at 3:00 PM local time.
The day will feature three matches: an Under-13 encounter between Pele and Vurlon Mills Academy, a senior clash between Pele and Camptown, and an Under-19 showdown between Pele and Buxton Stars.
The Under-19 match is highly anticipated, given the recent close contests between the two sides.
