Berbice woman celebrates 102nd birthday

A woman from Region Six has marked her 102nd birthday.

Laise Lambert, affectionately known as ‘Grand Ma,’ was born on April 22, 1923, in Fyrish Village, Corentyne.

While she grew up in Fyrish Village, Ms. Lambert pursued her education in Kildonan Village, the neighboring area where she later settled after marriage. At just 20 years old, she wed and became the mother of 12 children, nine of whom are alive today.

Ms.Lambert dedicated many years to farming, cultivating rice and various cash crops, and she was actively involved in rice cutting.

After the passing of her husband in 1988, she migrated to the United States, returning to her roots four years ago.

Currently, she resides with her fourth child, a retired nurse who is committed to caring for her.

At the age of 102, Ms.Lambert remains mobile with some assistance. Although she faces challenges with her hearing, she continues to read independently.

Living alongside her 72-year-old daughter, Linda Lambert, they share a close bond, with Linda noting her mother’s struggles with dementia.

“We came here almost four years ago after residing in the United States. When I retired, I came back to Guyana, and I brought her with me. She is not as strong as she used to be, but thank God that she is here. She can do a lot of things for herself. She can shower herself with a little assistance. She loves to be outdoors. I have a hammock that she would normally be in, and once she is in the hammock, she is okay,” revealed.

Linda emphasized,” I can communicate with her and she can communicate with me even though she has a little hearing problem. She loves to dance. We had a hat show show in church on Sunday and she was the center of attraction, but she has a problem with eating. Now she does not like to eat before, I think it is because of the aging process. Apart from that, she loves to eat puri. She prefers to order food, but she will eat anything, a little bit at a time.”

Ms. Lambert boasts an impressive family tree, including 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren, reflecting a legacy of love and resilience.
