A tragic house fire on Monday evening resulted in the death of 49-year-old Floyd Moriah.
Moriah, also known as “Fidel,” resided at Lot 625, Number 30 Village, West Coast Berbice.
The fire broke out around 08:00 hrs on Monday. Residents in the vicinity noticed flames emerging from the structure and quickly spreading. They promptly raised the alarm.
Firefighters from the Onverwagt Fire Station arrived swiftly and extinguished the blaze.
Once the fire was under control, a thorough search revealed the charred remains of Moriah inside what was left of the house. His body has been transported to Bailey’s Funeral Home, pending a postmortem examination.
Moriah lived alone in a one-storey wooden house measuring approximately 15 feet by 20 feet and was powered by Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
Reports indicate that he was suffering from neuropathy.
The house was not insured, and the total damage has yet to be assessed.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
