Olympian Emanuel Archibald will spearhead Team Guyana, which is set to compete at the South American Athletics Championships in Argentina from April 25-27.
Archibald, the national record holder in both the long jump (8.12m) and 100m (10.09s), will focus solely on the long jump event in Argentina, according to a press release issued by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) on Wednesday.
He comes into the competition with a season’s best of 7.95m in the long jump, achieved in Jamaica in March, according to World Athletics.
Other members of the team include Noelex Holder (200m), Akeem Stewart (100m), Shemar Horatio (200m), Analisa Redmond (Long Jump), Natrica Hooper (Triple Jump), Kerion DeSouza (100m), and Leslain Baird (Javelin).
Quinse Clarke will coach the team.
The locally based athletes departed on Wednesday.
The AAG has expressed its best wishes to the team and the coaches from the various clubs who have prepared the athletes.
The association also extended its gratitude to the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Olympic Association for their financial support towards the team’s participation in the championships.
Guyana will be aiming to build on their performance at the 2021 South American Championships, where they secured four individual medals and one team medal, with several athletes also achieving personal and season bests.
At the 2021 edition, the Men’s 4x100m Relay team won bronze, while Archibald claimed silver in the Men’s 100m.
Andrea Foster took bronze in the Women’s 800m, Jasmine Abrams won bronze in the Women’s 100m, and Jenea McCammon also finished third in the 100m hurdles.
