Third place finish for Guyana as Bajans defend Rising Stars U-15 title

Despite a fighting half-century from all-rounder Brandon Henry, Guyana lost to Barbados in the final round of the Cricket West Indies’ Rising Stars Under-15, 50-over Championship at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua on Wednesday.

The Bajans played unbeaten, winning all five of their matches to successfully defend the title. Guyana, with three wins and two defeats, ended third behind Trinidad and Tobago.

Chasing 210, Guyana folded for 160 in 45.3 overs with Henry making 50 off 88 balls (3x4s) to lead a resurgence from 55-5 in the 17th over.

Justin Dowlin (2), Lomar Seecharran (20), Shahid Ramzan (10), Arif Bacchus (5) and Richard Ramdeholl (0) were dismissed early as the Bajans seized the advantage in defending their total.

Henry and Nathaniel Ramsammy then added 29 for the sixth wicket and Henry and Reyaz Latif put on 40 for the seventh wicket, but the task proved too big in the end.

Ramsammy stroked 32 off 34 (4x4s), Latif made 12 off 38 and Usain Fredericks a run-a-ball 17 (2x4s).

Bowling for Barbados, Asher Branford took 3-19, Rajeev Parsooram 2-19, Justin Parris 2-25 and Joshua Thompson 2-35.

Earlier, leg-spinner Latif picked up 3-31 off 10 overs to finish with 15 wickets, the most in the tournament, as Barbados won the toss and opted to bat first.

Henry (2-24), Usain Fredericks (2-53) and Rafell McKenzie (1-34) were also among the wickets for Guyana.

Wicketkeeper Seth Smith topscored with 47, skipper Parris made 38, Parsooram 21, Yuvraj Persaud 19 and Branford 18.

At the Antigua Recreation Ground: Trinidad and Tobago defeated Leeward Islands by six wickets
