Police sergeant charged with shooting death of  Linden’s Ronaldo Peters

A senior police officer has been formally charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a young man in Linden earlier this month, according to advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sergeant Philbert Kendall, aged 45, was brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was charged with the murder of 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters. He has been remanded in custody until May 09. Legal representation is being provided by attorney Patrice Henry.

The incident, which reportedly took place on Monday April 07, involved the plain-clothes Sergeant who allegedly shot Peters. During court proceedings, it was revealed that on the day in question, Kendall, who was serving as a subordinate officer at the Wismar Police Station, armed himself with a 9mm firearm loaded with 15 rounds before departing in a privately operated minibus.

Following the shooting, Kendall allegedly transported the injured Peters to the Wismar Police Station before the young man was eventually taken to hospital for treatment. Despite medical intervention, Peters later succumbed to his injuries.

News of the fatal shooting sparked outrage in the mining town of Linden, leading to widespread demonstrations. During these protests, another man, 32-year-old Keon Fogenay, was also allegedly shot and killed by police.

Authorities have now confirmed that the investigation into Peters’ death has concluded. According to a statement from Police Headquarters, both the Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the Regional Security System (RSS) have completed their inquiries.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the death of Keon Fogenay remains ongoing. Investigators are expected to interview additional witnesses on Tuesday to finalise the case.

The RSS is also set to present a comprehensive report of its findings and recommendations, which will be made available from Friday, 25 April.
