Some 1,500 house lots for allocation in East Berbice in two days

To ensure the economic transformation of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) is possible, a total of 1,500 house lots will be allocated to residents in the coming days.

This massive Dream Realised Housing Drive for the region will tackle the serious backlog of 6,200 pending house lot applications.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal on Friday said since 2020 a total of 4,545 house lots were allocated in the region and 3,993 new applications are pending from Region Six alone. To meet the government’s target of 50,000, a total of 45,000 house lots have already been allocated across Guyana.

This year all applications from December 2024 and prior will be addressed in the region. Starting with 700 house lots to be allocated on Friday.

“We have committed and we are responding, so there is no need to get anxiety, there is no need to worry because we will work every day for all ten regions to address housing matters,” Minister Croal committed.

The allocations were done at locations Providence and Glasgow, along East Bank Berbice.

At the weekend, house lots will be allocated in housing developments at Providence and Glasgow, along East Bank Berbice. Added to house lots, 173 persons will be able to uplift titles for land. Persons will also, on Saturday, be able to receive cement and steel vouchers amounting to a total of $5 million, the minister said.

Minister Croal said the likelihood of people accomplishing homeownership later in their life-span is becoming less and less with this robust housing drive.

“In your 20’s you will be able to be allocated your land as well as to be able to have your own home therefore allowing you to start your future early.

“It [titles] gives you legal ownership and security and you’ve been hearing our President [Dr Irfaan Ali] and the others speaking about generational wealth and stability because when you have a title, it is passed on to the next generation and that allows you to have long-term planning and investment and economic stability,” the minister said.

Following this session, another set of house lots will be allocated at Region Six in May. The government is also conducting regularisation of areas and persons living in those areas will be given their land titles as this process continues.

Persons at the Central Housing and Planning Authority’s dream Realised programme on Friday.

Already some $16.3 billion was invested to ensure that land in Region Six is developed and the houses at the developments will be completed this year to fast track the move in process.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues said homeownership can greatly transform entire families. She said these are the areas of development the government is committed to providing access to citizens.

“You may be the first person in your family that will own a piece of land, and so you are going to change the trajectory of your family and of the future generations, because at our core, all of us want a better future for our children,” Minister Rodrigues said.

Rodrigues also said to ensure that all the backlog in the region is addressed, the ministry is developing several other areas where house lots will need to be allocated from.

Notably, the ministry is also focused on ensuring that land for agriculture is made available.
