Adriana Younge will be laid to rest today; Police, Gov’t appeal for peaceful funeral procession

As the nation marks Arrival Day on Monday, the late Adriana Younge will be laid to rest amid calls from both the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Home Affairs for a peaceful and respectful farewell.

The Guyana Police Force has expressed serious concern following a Facebook post by attorney Nigel Hughes, who alleged that individuals and organisations were planning to disrupt Ms Yonge’s funeral and incite violence. Police say they made several unsuccessful attempts to contact Mr Hughes by telephone for clarification, later messaging him on WhatsApp. While he responded, he declined to provide further information, citing the need to protect his sources.

In a public statement, the Force reassured the public that it will be closely monitoring funeral proceedings and stands ready to enforce the law. “We urge all citizens to respect the solemnity of the occasion and to cooperate with law enforcement,” the statement read. “Let us honour the wishes of the family and ensure that Adriana Yonge is laid to rest in peace.”

Echoing the call for calm, the Ministry of Home Affairs reminded citizens of the need to maintain a non-disruptive, safe, and respectful environment. The Ministry highlighted that 5 May is not only the day of Ms Yonge’s funeral but also marks the commencement of the CXC examinations and national Arrival Day celebrations.

“The Guyana Police Force, with the full support of the Joint Services, is on alert to respond to specific and general requests from the public to assure calm and security,” the Ministry said.

Both agencies have stressed that any attempt to disturb the peace will be met with swift legal consequences.
