‘King and Queen of Sand’ football set for May 18 kick-off in Linden

The highly anticipated fifth edition of the ‘One Guyana’ King and Queen of the Sand Football championships is poised to ignite the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.

The opening day of action has been confirmed for Sunday, May 18th.

A formidable lineup of 74 teams – 64 male and 10 female – are set to converge on the sandy pitch of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP-C) Linden office ground, all vying for ultimate supremacy in this demanding format of the beautiful game.

The tournament, known for its intense and competitive nature, will test each participant’s fitness and skill.

Ten teams will compete in the female division in a round-robin format. Defending champions Speightland will face stiff competition from formidable sides such as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Iconic Strikers, and Hururu.

In the male segment, a massive field of 64 teams will compete in a straight knockout format.

The road to the ‘King of the Sand’ title will be arduous, with defending champions DC Ballers looking to retain their crown against strong contenders including Hard Knocks, Spaniards, YMCA, and LA Ballers.

The championship boasts a significant prize pool, with over four million dollars in cash, trophies, and other incentives across both divisions.

Following the grand opening on May 18th, the tournament will unfold over several action-packed days. The scheduled playing dates are May 18th, 21st, 23rd, 24th, 26th, 30th, and 31st.

The intensity will ratchet up in June with the Quarter-finals on the 4th, the Semi-finals on the 7th, culminating in the Grand Finals on the 14th, where the 2025 ‘King and Queen of the Sand’ will be crowned.
