ERC demands ban on Vybz Kartel song, clarifies Baby Skello’s arrest

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) of Guyana has called for an immediate ban on the song “Good Like Jesus” by Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel, describing its lyrics as blasphemous and deeply offensive to the Christian community and other faith groups.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commission condemned the song for what it described as a “profoundly disrespectful” portrayal of Jesus Christ, a figure revered not only in Christianity but also held in high regard in both Islamic and Hindu traditions. The ERC warned that content of this nature threatens the interfaith harmony that underpins Guyana’s multicultural society.

“While freedom of artistic expression is protected, it is not absolute,” the ERC noted. “Such freedom must be exercised responsibly, with sensitivity towards the religious and cultural values of all communities.”

The Commission has formally called for the song to be banned from the airwaves and removed from all digital platforms within Guyana. It is also engaging the promoter of an upcoming concert featuring Vybz Kartel to ensure that the offensive content is not disseminated during the event.

The ERC emphasised its commitment to maintaining respect among religious groups and preserving public decency. “Acts of religious disrespect will not be tolerated and will be addressed with firm and constructive measures,” the Commission stated.

In a related matter, the ERC addressed public speculation regarding the recent arrest of local artist Baby Skello by the Guyana Police Force. His arrest followed the release of a song that reportedly contained offensive material against the Hindu faith.

While the Commission acknowledged the police’s right to investigate and take action, it clarified that Baby Skello has not been referred to law enforcement by the ERC. The matter is currently being handled internally, and the artist has been summoned to appear before the Commission.

The ERC also confirmed that artists Richard Singh and Vision Clake have been summoned over their controversial song “Chiney”, which has sparked criticism for its potentially offensive content.
