Dexter France, a man who is also known as Chiney, was allegedly murdered by Steve Williams, a 20-year-old man of Khan Hill, Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini) on Sunday.
Police Headquarters said the man was found dead at a gold mining campsite at Wrong Turn Backdam, Puruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Preliminary investigations revealed that France and Williams were working together at the campsite and got into an argument. Williams reportedly armed himself with a cutlass and dealt France a chop to the chest.
Police later visited the scene; France’s body was then transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, then to Memorial Gardens Funeral home for post-mortem examination. The autopsy revealed that he died from the chop wound to his chest.
Williams was arrested on Monday at the Police checkpoint in Itaballi. He appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to answer to the charge of Murder: Contrary to Common Law.
Williams was not required to plead and was remanded to prison. This matter will be heard again on July 10, 2025.
