Vitz Cup ignites Guyana’s Motorsport with thrilling start

A new chapter in Guyanese motorsport has officially begun with the successful launch of the inaugural Vitz Cup Championship at the South Dakota Circuit on April 27.

The Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMRSC) promotion delivered on its promise of close, competitive racing.

A grid of 14 cars, featuring a blend of emerging talent and established racers, took to the track.

The championship’s debut event showcased three intense six-lap races, designed to put driver skill at the forefront.

The field was split into two classes, ‘A’ and ‘B’, based on lap times to ensure a level playing field.

Among the early victors who etched their names into Vitz Cup history were Nyron Maraj, Bishram Rajaram, Darryl Akeung, Rameez Mohamed, and Reeyaz Hamid.

Their performances highlighted the competitive nature of the new one-make series.

Perhaps the most dramatic moments of the day arrived in the final Vitz race. As dusk settled and rain began to fall, the circuit was transformed.

Cars navigated the challenging, wet conditions with headlights piercing the gloom and brake lights glowing, creating a visually stunning and unpredictable spectacle for those watching. It was a stark reminder of motorsport’s raw excitement.

A significant storyline from the opener was the impressive real-world debut of simulator racer Darryl Akeung. Drawing on his virtual experience, Akeung made an immediate impact, winning the first race and setting the fastest lap of the day with a time of 1:35.411.

His performance underscored the series’ core principle that driver talent and discipline can triumph over significant financial outlay.

Remarkably, all 14 competitors safely negotiated the opening corner without incident in the opening race, setting a precedent for clean and disciplined racing that continued throughout the day.

This was a testament to the series’ structure and emphasis on fair play.

The diverse entry list, featuring both seasoned competitors and rookie drivers, was a welcome surprise for the GMRSC and series engineers.

It added an extra layer of unpredictability and legitimacy to the championship.

Central to the Vitz Cup’s ethos of accessibility and driver development is its strictly enforced “spec” format. MyLaps timing data is used to police a time-based classification system: A Class for lap times between 1:35.000 and 1:36.999, and B Class for times of 1:37.000 and above.

A strict rule of disqualification for any A Class driver dipping below the 1:35.000 mark is in place to prevent performance modifications and maintain the series’ cost-effectiveness.

The B Class serves as a crucial stepping stone for new drivers, offering a competitive environment in which they can hone their skills and progress to the A Class.

Comprehensive regulations cover weight, engine, ECU, and suspension to ensure a level playing field and deter technical infringements.

The launch event received a significant boost from Bardon Construction Services, who provided over $400,000 in trophies, acknowledging the competitors’ efforts and supporting the vision for accessible grassroots motorsport in Guyana.

Looking ahead, the GMRSC is actively seeking a title sponsor and brand partners to support the championship’s growth.

With a strong initial turnout and increasing interest, the Vitz Cup is well-positioned to offer valuable visibility for businesses looking to connect with the burgeoning motorsport audience in Guyana.

The promising debut suggests the Vitz Cup Championship is poised to become a vital foundation for grassroots racing, providing a clear pathway for aspiring drivers, delivering thrilling action for fans, and promoting a sport built on opportunity, integrity, and head-to-head competition.
