A 30-year-old mother of two now lives in fear after her estranged husband stabbed her and injured their son during a disagreement on Friday.
Felicia Dharamjeet, during an interview with the News Room on Monday, said she has been married to Mahendra Rampersaud for some 14 years.
The woman left their Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara home three months ago and took their two sons, an 11-year-old and a nine-year-old, with her to stay with her parents at Bladen Hall, ECD.
On Friday, at about 15:00 hrs, Rampersaud, who picks up the children from school each day and takes them to their mother (Dharamjeet), went to the residence and accused Dharamjeet of having a relationship with another person and alleged that she was spreading false information about him (Rampersaud). She denied this and alleged that the man became enraged and stabbed her.
Recounting the events, Dharamjeet said her mother told the man to go home, and as she was about to close the door, the man pushed her (Dharamjeet).
“And then he come and attack me with a knife and I tried to fight, and also, the two kids jump up and try to beg he.
“The big one, he get some cut in the hand, on the palm, and on the thumb. After he see that I deh lifeless, he run away,” the woman said.
Dharamjeet was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for two stab wounds to her neck and lacerations to her hand. She obtained the cuts while trying to hold off her husband from harming her.
The couple’s older son was taken to the Nabaclis Health Centre, where he received stitches to his hand and was sent home. The woman’s mother, Sita Mangal, 59, told the News Room that she became scared when she saw her daughter had two stab wounds to her neck.
Now, the woman fears for her life and the lives of her children.
“My life and the two kids life [is in danger]…I want to go somewhere safe because at my mom, they don’t have a fence,” she said.
The matter was reported at the Vigilance Police Station on Friday, and the Police are currently investigating the matter.
Dharamjeet, however, said a report was made to the Police before. The woman said their relationship was “nice” until she became pregnant with their first son. She later found out that her husband was involved in another relationship, but the couple decided to work through this issue.
However the constant accusations and fights did not end.
“After he continue and everything was an argument, like everything was a problem,” Dharamjeet recounted.
She made successful applications for restraining orders against Rampersaud on two occasions, but she withdrew the first one in an attempt to work on the marriage.
